What do You Think ?

Extraterrestrial life (from the Latin words: extra ["beyond" or "not of"] and terrestris ["of or belonging to Earth"]) is defined as life that does not originate from Earth. It is often also referred to as alien life or simply aliens (or space aliens, to differentiate from other definitions of alien or aliens). These hypothetical forms of life range from simple bacteria-like organisms to beings far more complex than humans.
The development and testing of hypotheses on extraterrestrial life is known as exobiology or astrobiology; the term astrobiology, however, includes the study of life on Earth viewed in its astronomical context. Nonetheless, scientists at the National Institutes of Health reported studies that life in the universe may have begun "9.7±2.5 billion years ago", billions of years before the Earth was formed, based on extrapolating the "genetic complexity of organisms" (from "major phylogenetic lineages") to earlier times.[1][2] Many scientists consider extraterrestrial life to be plausible, but there is no direct evidence of its existence. Since the mid-20th century, there has been an ongoing search for signs of extraterrestrial life, from radios used to detect possible extraterrestrial signals to telescopes used to search for potentially habitable extrasolar planets

  1. We are what's going to kill us all if pollution and destruction of the planet doesn't do it first.
Drilling is causing global warming and it's causing climate change , get real people we are causes our own destruction .
Hey , that just me and the way I roll , nuff sez !

    1. Hi PIC,
We are in the process of committing suicide, slowly, painfully, one species at a time. They are not producing any great new ideas for slowing down global warming. And like you, I think our tax dollars should be spent on that, before space exploration. We don't have the technology to get off the planet and go somewhere else anyhow. Only the chosen, privileged few get to go on the mother ship to Mars.
      Luv you girl

  2. Jeannie ,
It's too late to try and not be noticed. We've been broadcasting our presence to everybody in the Universe ever since Marconi invented the wireless. If there's anybody out there to receive the signals, "I Love Lucy" is out there to be picked up about sixty light years away from us. This means that we have already sent unintended messages to over 10,000 stellar systems in a spherical diameter two hundred and twenty light years across and it keeps getting bigger.

Either there are no civilizations within that area advanced enough to receive the signals or they are ignoring us,or they have not had time to send a reply. The other thing is that even if they are picking up our transmissions, it is not that easy to travel from one star to another. If it were otherwise, they would already be here broadcasting demands for our surrender.

"The tools of conquest do not necessarily come with bombs and explosions and fallout. There are weapons that are simply thoughts, attitudes, prejudices, to be found only in the minds of men. For the record, prejudices can kill, and suspicion can destroy, and the thoughtless, frightened search for a scapegoat has a fallout all of its own: for the children, and the children yet unborn. And the pity of it is that these things cannot be confined to the Twilight Zone."

What intelligent life form would want to visit us? If I were an alien I wouldn't even stop here for gas!

    Just my humble opinion (smiling)

  3. I agree with your point of view, Gil. Iintelligent life out there, somewhere, is a compelling concept ; extra-terrestrials existing on other planets, who are millennia more advanced than we are, awesome. In our galaxy, there are over 100 billion stars; the galaxy is 100,000 light years across and there are an infinite number of galaxies in the universe. So, I believe there is something out there, but they will never find their way to us, nor would they want to. As doctor Kaku says,' would we be interested in visiting a colony of ants'? They would have to be thousands or even millions of years ahead of us ( a type three civilization who could harness the energy of a galaxy....maybe de-stabilizing space/time with Planck energy propulsion)). We are a type 0 civilization; we haven't even amassed enough energy to break the light barrier yet, so we can't seek out these aliens. On the other end of the scale...they could be slugs.
NASA is experimenting with ion engines; fusion engines are decades away. Theoretically, they think they can harness the energy of anti-matter. That has to be a century away and very expensive. And the most advanced energy source for space travel we can theorize, is being powered by quantum gravity and travelling through worm holes. Those things have to be thousands of years off so the extra-terrestrials are safe from us. And I don't think we will be visited by them any time soon. If they came upon us by chance, they would exterminate us in a nano-second, reduce earth to the size of a dot and take it home to extract anything useful.
Not to worry, we are exterminating each other and the planet anyhow . Pardon me for babbling on.
    Friendly neighborhood Genie
