Solar Storms Disrupt Navigation Systems

 
 

 
Parts of northern Britain have witnessed the spectacular Northern Lights this week, triggered by a violent storm raging on the surface of the Sun.
The stream of particles creating these displays can be very disruptive to satellite navigation systems.
Scientists now estimate that systems can lose significant accuracy during the worst solar storms.
Science editor David Shukman reports on the latest research on the Arctic island of Svalbard.
