Watch Out For Yellowstone Bears - They're Hungry

Yellowstone's grizzlies are going to be particularly hungry this fall, and that means more dangerous meetings with humans in a year that is already the area's deadliest on record.
Scientists report that a favorite food of many bears, nuts from whitebark pine cones, is scarce. So as grizzlies look to put on some major pounds in preparation for the long winter ahead, scientists say, they will be looking for another source of protein — meat — and running into trouble along the way. Wildlife managers already report bears coming down off the mountains and into areas frequented by hunters, berry pickers and hikers.
"Pack your bear spray: there's going to be run-ins," said grizzly researcher Chuck Schwartz with the U.S. Geological Survey.
Two people have been fatally mauled by grizzlies so far this year in Wyoming and Montana. Experts said that's the most in one year in at least a century for the Yellowstone region, which also includes parts of Idaho.
The bears in both instances were later killed. Full-grown Yellowstone bears can stand 6 feet tall and top 600 pounds. They have been known to peel off a man's face with a single swipe of their massive, clawed paws.
In the latest attack, a Michigan man was killed and two others injured when an undernourished bear and her three cubs marauded through a crowded campground near Cooke City, Mont. on July 28. A month earlier, a botanist from Cody, Wyo. was killed by a bear shortly after the animal woke up from being tranquilized by researchers.
And it's not just humans at risk. Yellowstone's grizzlies were recently ordered back onto the threatened species list by a federal judge who cited in part a decline in whitebark pine. Beetles, apparently surviving winters in larger numbers due to less frequently freezing temperatures, have decimated vast stands of the high-altitude trees. In some areas studied by researchers, more than 70 percent of trees have been killed.
While bears aren't starving, the loss of whitebark is driving increasing numbers of conflicts with humans.
"Every year is now a bad year for whitebark pine," said Louisa Wilcox with the Natural Resources Defense Council. "We can expect more conflicts and we are getting it."

Government scientists said the two fatal maulings came too early in the year for whitebark pine to have played a role. Bears typically don't start gorging themselves on the troves of pine nuts that are stashed by squirrels until mid-August.  But the attacks highlighted the hazards of a region that is home to an estimated 580 grizzlies and visited by more than 3 million people a year. And officials said the maulings should serve as a warning as bears begin to push to lower elevations. Adult males will need to gain on average 50 pounds in the next few months to last through the winter.
"Right now every god-dang dead cow down in this country's got grizzlies on them," said Mark Bruscino, a bear specialist with the Wyoming Game and Fish Department in Cody. "We've already had a couple of reports of bears on the gut piles of hunter-killed elk. Road-killed deer have bears on them."
Hazardous encounters with humans are considered most likely outside Yellowstone National Park, in occupied areas along the fringes of the bears' 14,000-square-mile wilderness habitat.

The record number of bear deaths, 79, came in 2008 — another poor year for whitebark pine. Global warming rears it's ugly head again.

  8. I got your email.Lots of interesting information in it.
The twins came home tonight. They called me to invite me to a drive-in tomorrow night. So I won't be online.
They had a marvellous time. They went to Summerhouse Park on Miller Lake. It is beautiful there. We used to keep a motorhome up there so we could spend time up there. There are lots of things to do there for kids. It has a nice little beach and canoes and paddle boats and go-carts and it is in the deep woods where you can see deer and bears. They went up there with Bio and his sister and my son Al.They loved it up there. It is about 3 1/2 hrs drive straight north so it is fairly wild.

Sis told me people is going to think we are a cult saying this is a compound and laugh her arse off.

  15. Did you have panties on? You'll have to be a bit more careful with a curious little boy around.

    Jesse ...means gift

'Jonathan' means gift of God and it was your daddy's name.

Nathanial and Mathew both mean 'gift of God.'

I like a nice home that when people come to visit they will want to come back, we live here and it's not a showcase just nice/clean and comfortable and everyone that visits feels at home.
I do have a rule no running in the house and pick up and put away your stuff. The kids/Dad do find it's just this big one here that I have trouble with.

Sweetie...I had a dream about my daddy/mama last week, and they were together and they seem to be smiling, and then they just faded away.

  30. How is Gilly adapting to a new guy in his room?

I guess the girls are still enchanted with him. This will work very well all around.
When you think of him living with an aunt who took him in ,maybe, begrudgingly( Maybe the aunt is poor also) or when you think of him being bounced around in foster care,it is so clear that you did exactly the right thing.

I was afraid he was not going to sleep well or maybe wet the bed.
That kid acts like he's been here all his life.
Annie says she will stay until he's adjusted and he know she will always love him.
I didn't know she had 3 other kids that was adopted about 7 years ago.
I told you what Gil told her about helping her get a better job , maybe security .
It was in the second e-mail I sent you.

Yes he got all new clothes for school and he needed everything.
all the family was calling and asked what he needed, we all recycle and Gil said we was going to but him all new stuff, let him start his new life with him very own things.
Gil and the girls carried him shopping for school supplies and clothes and what a happy little boy, all he had was some old tennis shoes for school. The girls helped him pick out his stuff and they were so proud.

  44. Anonymous11:48:00 PM

    We will call him Jonny.
He gets a grin on his face when he say mama and Gil just smiles when he say daddy.
Emily says if Gil/I had met when we was younger, she bet I would had more babies than my mama.
I didn't know she wanted to give him up.Annie asked NAN about a month ago and NAN told her she had to ask me, NAN says she thought she was kidding and just forgot about it.

I will miss you but I know you will return.
Always check your E-mal before going to bed, I have to tell you what's happening each day.

  48. Get to bed sweetie. You have to make sure your platoon of kids all have clean underwear on in the morning and wash and brush and eat right. Boy you are going to be one busy woman.

When the honeymoon phase of the adoption and moving in is over don't be surprised if he misses his mama some day and has a little cry.It may never happen but he may feel it on the inside. When you are a kid you always get homesick for the familiar things you are used to, even if they weren't as good as you have now.
It would be a normal thing and it will pass.
