The Danube Reveals it's Metal Graveyard

The Danube has fallen to its lowest level for more than 120 years, paralysing shipping and at one stretch, between Serbia and Romania, revealing the wrecks of a long-forgotten fleet of World War II German warships.
You cannot mistake just how dramatically the Danube has dropped when you stand  on the quayside at the Serbian port of Prehovo.  A series of depth markers, some 10 metres in height, mark where there used to be water only to run out before reaching the present water surface. The harbour master jokes that for the first time in his career there is no point even trying to record the river's depth.  But his is the only joke along the banks of what is meant to be Europe's mightiest waterway. Usually, at least a dozen so-called "convoys" of vessels - massive tugs pulling long lines of barges - plough their way between the Black Sea and the heart of the European continent.  The economic loss is incalculable. But there is another reason for the Danube's level to cause concern as well.

Just upstream of Prehovo, a tangle of metal shapes has broken through the rippling surface - the remnants of what was once Hitler's Danube Fleet.  The river was as strategically important then as it is now but when in 1944 the Nazi forces were in retreat, the German admirals felt they had only one option - to scuttle more than 80 of their river-going warships.  Now, all because of the drought that has afflicted great swathes of Europe this summer, this footnote in history has resurfaced.  The river authorities were amazed at this discovery and immediately began questioning local people for more information - with startling results.

One old man they spoke to, Vojislav Lapadatavic, who had worked in the German military kitchens, described how the ships were sunk even though there were wounded crewmen on board.  "We saw people on board a hospital ship one night and the next morning the ship had been sunk," he said.   According to local accounts, as many as 2,000 German sailors who were too badly wounded to be evacuated during the retreat by land  perished in the operation - drowned by their own countrymen.  The thought of so many men doomed in that way - even the enemy - still haunts those who work on the river.

A local TV company hired divers to try to get a look underwater but to no avail - there was too much silt and mud for clear pictures.  Many people in Prehovo blame global warming for what is happening to the Danube. They also wonder what other grim discoveries  may surface before the waters rise again. They were  more at peace with those old secrets hidden safely beneath the waters of the Danube. "Dat ole' man river, he don't say nothin.'"

We will have to start cutting our chatting shorter at night and start leaving notes if we forget to tell the other something.

We just don't realize how much it takes out of you and I should know better, you need a lot more rest.

  3. Hi PIC
I'm feeling full of pep today. We had rather an exhausting round of doctors and tests for Nana yesterday and she wanted to visit her financial advisors and yell at them (which she did much to her satisfaction). Then I had to do her grocery shopping and ours so I was pooped. I started shaking which happens when my constitution can't take any more exposures to pollution and gasoline etc.

Today we just catch up with household chores and a bit of gardening. We might take Nana out for dinner. She loves that. She can show off her new cane which is very pretty and has flowers and patterns on it. She is fascinated with it. And at the restaurant she can have fun tripping the waitresses with it.

Tomorrow we will visit J and P at the lake. It will rain tomorrow so we will probably stay indoors and play with the kids. Jane and Alex may visit also. Alex needs company; his mom just died after fighting cancer for a few years.

Monday we will be going into Toronto with Dale and Barb for the day. The shopping is fab and the restaurants are very good.We will have some great laughs. That's all we do when we get together.

What are you doing this weekend? Do you have all the back to school supplies and backpacks yet? What about your little ladies' wardrobes. Do they have a lot of pretty new outfits? I love dressing little girls. I haven't had the pleasure lately.

Are you still having those terrible high temperatures? We have a storm and tornado warning in effect. You haven't had a really bad hurricane so far have you? It is still hot up here but we are told we may get some relief next week.Still boiling throughout Europe though.I hope you're all well and happy there and Long Shank has paid your wages one way or another.
Give our little man a kiss for me and give yourself a hug from me. Talk to you soon...LUV...PIC

PS:I will put up a couple of recipes sometime today when I get some more time. Please give dad a hug from me too....J
