I can't tell you how sad this situation is. Much more could have been done long ago. The fragile ecosystems now damaged, possibly beyond repair.
I got my degree in chemistry and one of my projects that I was working on with my professor was to find a better and safer way to clean up oil spills such as this one. There are ways to do it, different ways then what BP is doing, but they aren't taking advantage of some of the newer techniques out there.
What a shame this is. From what I understand the rig was not meeting safety standards. This should be criminal.
